Multiplayer questions

I feels so much like a newbie....
I have a confession to make, NS will be my first HL multiplayer mod (if you don't count LAN games and Diablo 2). I've decided I want to start with the best MP mod (and I have no intentions of being a llama). Well I have some questions...

1.) Do I have to hunt down a special HL server to play or does it refer to my regular server? If I do, where and how do I hunt one down?
2.) What is good ping and how do I find out mine (btw I have a cable modem so what's the average for them)?
3.) Any other advice?

Coming from a long time TFC fan A -good- ping is below 100. A -great- ping is below 50. Of course, if you are server admin., your ping is 0, unless you're running a dedicated server. You need two computers to play on one of your own dedicated servers. Not quite sure how to explain why...

    Get <a href="http://www.gamespy3d.com"" target="_blank">Gamespy3D.

As stated, below 100 is good. (I never play on anything below a 50 myself, but then again I'm hooked directly into an internet backbone, so...

As for servers, they just need to be playing NS. The servers don't work like they do in D2, where you have one server running a lot of games. You have one server per game. This server could be running DMC, this server could be running TFC, this server could be running CS, and a hundred servers will all be running NS! ON THE FIRST DAY! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

I'll make sure to have one running! And whenever I don't, to be in a server every day... all night... forevar.

Moleculer, gamespy might in fact be the worst problem ever. I would rather eat poop than use it. Ok, maybe not but it sucks. lags everything up. Medal of Honor multi. was ruined by it. Dont let Gamespy happen to YOU!

I've never had a problem running Gamespy3D. Perhaps you're thinking of the kid-version, GameSpy Arcade? That program -sucks-.

I use a server browser called The All-Seeing Eye. Can't remember the URL offhand, but you'll probably find it on Google. It's very nice

    Nothing under 100!!?!

Jebus, I practically never get any lower then 240, staying at around 320 usually.

I actually pay about 20$ a night to play in an internetcafe where they have computers especially configured for on-line gaming ( and a 2Mb connection to go with it:)
So I usually ping at around 30 to 40 when playing on European servers. But anything below 100 is fine.
If NS is going to be your first Multiplayer mod then you will be a spoiled brat ( joke ) imagine having to play all those other horrible on-line games like that mod with the halo and the electric drill..anyone knows what the ___ is up with that?
Maybe its a good idea to play some teamfortress classic while you are waiting for ns to come out...TFC Looks nowhere near as cool as NS but it has some elements wich could be usefull for you to practice such as working together in a team or making keybinds for quick communication( for those who dont have voicecomms )

If you havnt played one before make sure you know how to strafe around corners. It is your basic skill. when your walking twords a corner switch to the left strafe if your going right an switch to the right strafe if your going left and move the mouse in the oposite direction your pressing on the key board so you come out of the turn looking strait ahead and you dont get a surprise of taking damage before your hits are lined up. If you combine this with sniping you can get a 6-1 ratio (6 kills per every death). Also listening is a big part. you can hide in a hall way and listen for them coming so you can line up your shot. And you can just use the ingame browser for finding servers its the easiest way if your new to the genre. Anything I missed?

Gamespy 3D completely rocks. Best program I've ever used and I've used many - including that Eye thingy.

However ... Gamespy Arcade is a different matter completely.

This program is the worst pos I've ever seen in my entire 19 years of existence ...

Thanks! I did get some TFC pratice and learned the corner stafe from one of my friends while helping me out in Deus Ex (lean, stafe, and sniper a military robot with a GEP gun and no skill in the weapon is fun&#33). I do need to go hunt down a server though....

    I'm a beast now! Roar!
